Nicolas Cage too Busy to be Capone

The Untouchables
The Untouchables: Capone Rising -- that name is three different kinds of lame by the way -- appeared to be Nicolas Cage's next stop that would have seen him take over the role of Al Capone from Robert De Niro, who played the infamous real-life crook in the 1987 feature film directed by Brian De Palma.

Along with De Niro, Kevin Kostner played Elliot Ness alongside a disparate group of crime fighters in Sean Connery and Andy Garcia, all of whom were absolutely excellent in what is probably one of my favorite films of all time.

News that De Palma was going to do the prequel was exciting, but now I find reason to question where this one will be going. David Mamet penned the screenplay for the first film, based on a book by Ness himself. The story was engaging and crafted brilliantly, something Mamet excels at, so why not bring him back to do it again?

I am not impressed with the writing credits of the trio brought on board to do this project, where first you've got to figure that three writers is going to be bad no matter what. Three writers means three visions (four if you count De Palma) and none of their records is all that impressive, especially not when you put them against Mamet.

Similarly, you're going to ride with a whole new cast, and there's just no way you're going to get the kind of talent they had back in 87. I like Nick Cage, by the way, and I think he'd be a solid fit for this role, but they didn't even get him, and he's not exactly waiting to be discovered here.

Supposedly, Cage bowed out of the talks due to a lack of time. He's still working on a sequel to the 50/50 action flick National Treasure 2. There is no other information that I'm aware of as to who may star in Untouchables 2, but I'll be sure to follow that wherever it goes.
