Mummy 3: Rachel Wesiz Out, Maria Bello In

We know that the studio is looking for a new cast to carry on The Mummy once Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz got bored with it or the stories for them got to be too stale, and this was evidenced by the cast selection for Mummy 3 in who was chosen to play their son.

I've always assumed, and up until today, I've never heard otherwise -- that Fraser and Weisz would do at least one more flick in the franchise. Turns out I was wrong, as word from Variety comes that Weisz is out, and Maria Bello is in, not just as an addition to the cast, but as a literal replacement for Weisz.

Bello will play Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, the adventuress played in the first two films by Weisz. After Weisz declined to reprise, Cohen and the studio cast a wide net for a replacement.

She may be good, and the film may be good -- even though the second one wasn't -- but she's definitely no Rachel Weisz.

  • NBC is renewing all three Law & Order series, moving Criminal Intent to its own cable channel USA. Note to the Collider geniuses: this isn't groundbreaking, this is desperation to keep a dying franchise alive as cheaply as possible.
  • The host of The Discovery Channel's Shark Week, Jimmy Hall, died in an accident last Wednesday.
  • ILM will be doing the special effects for Iron Man.
  • Collider may not have the brightest people around, but they do score some damn fine interviews. Tim Kring, creator of Heroes.

Talk about total miscasting, Maria Bello is a good actress but she's not Rachel Weisz.

I agree. I wonder why she opted out of the third flick?
