M. Night Shyamalan flick gets a Star
Thursday, May 31, 2007 - reddit
Alright, technically The Happening already had a star in Mark Wahlberg, but now it has a star chick too. Zooey Deschanel has signed on for Shyamalan's latest film, which has a bit of a history behind it that you should find pretty interesting.
I heard about this project a while back when Shyamalan was shopping it around to all the big studios looking for a place to set up production, and it was notable for two reasons: Shyamalan was meeting directly with the studio heads, which never ever happens; and every single one of them passed on his script.
Shyamalan went home with notes and advice in hand, spending some 6+ weeks reworking it while doing other projects. He then went back to shopping, starting a small bidding war over it before finally landing at 20th Century Fox.
The story itself is about a family trying to survive a "global environmental crisis" that is a "paranoid thriller", but you'll have a hard time finding anything more solid than that. Shyamalan and Fox want to keep this one under wraps at least until it begins shooting later this year.
There are other points of interest, such as this being Shyamalan's first film geared up for an R-rating, and will represent his second project made outside of Disney. And given the description, the stated $57 million dollar budget seems pretty cheap for what they are getting. If it works out with a budget that small, it could mean huge bucks for Fox, even if it's not a blockbuster.
